HEAT
Heat is a pattern of imbalance in Chinese Fertility Medicine that refers to one or more of the following:
a feeling of heat in your body, a raised basal body temperature, a measured fever, or some type of inflammation typically related to infection.
It typically presents with one or more of the following signs:
over-activity, mood changes, inflammatory issues, bleeding, discolouration of body fluids (darker yellow urine, darker brown, purple or black blood, darker sputum (more yellow)), and symptoms of dryness and heat.
Too much heat typically affects the fluid and blood balance of the body, which can impact egg and sperm quality to varying degrees. It can also cause premature bleeding throughout the menstrual cycle, such as bleeding during the post-period, ovulatory and pre-period phases.
Typical heat symptoms include:
- Thirst
- Dry skin
- Constipation
- Dark urine
- Feeling hot
- Hot palms, soles of your feet or chest
- Red face
- Bleeding throughout the menstrual cycle at the wrong time (not during the menses phase)
- Inflammation of the skin – typically red, yellow, green or black in colour
- Yellow, red, green or black mucus or phlegm
- A yellow tongue coating
- A red tongue body (main area of the tongue)
- Blood in the urine
- Burning or hot symptoms anywhere in the body
- Fever and any type of infection
- Dryness – and reduced body fluids, particularly cervical mucus or semen.
Heat has an irritating and drying effect on the body that can damage the fluid balance of your cells, tissues, and organs.
This upsets the balance of the general body fluids such as saliva, urine, intestinal fluids, and cervical mucus. The reduction in these fluids causes dryness and as the fluids become deficient you experience a relative increase in heat sensation throughout your body.
For fertility to be at its optimum there needs to be a balance of fluids and regulated warmth. Too much heat and it dries everything out, too little heat and the body becomes cold and under-active.
Long term effect of too much Heat:
If you experience an extended period of increased Heat symptoms it may lead to other patterns of imbalance such as: Yin Deficiency, Blood Deficiency, Blood Stagnation. If the fluids are severely depleted by the Heat then Cold symptoms may eventually develop and the pattern gradually transforms into one of Coldness.
Key disorders related to Heat:
Reduced cervical mucus, reduced semen volume, Infections, inflammatory diseases, abnormal bleeding disorders (spotting, mid-cycle bleeding, flooding/heavy periods), nosebleeds, early ovulation, short cycles, elevated BBT chart temps in either phase, Hyperthyroidism (graves disease), some urinary tract infections, some sexually transmitted diseases, certain types of immune conditions, and issues relating to overactivity of the body.
Some common foods to help clear heat are:
Rhubarb, Asparagus, Radish, Spinach, Aubergine, Crab, Artichoke, Leafy green vegetables, Sweet potatoes, Broccoli, Barley
If you are experiencing more severe heat issues (fevers, infections etc) then please seek medical attention as some of these foods are not suitable, or may not be sufficient enough to resolve your issue.
